The Run Must Go On – WHEATHAMPSTEAD 10K/2K 2010 As in previous years the Wheathampstead 10K run will be taking place on May 23rd, starting in Sheepcote Lane and ending up on the Marford Playing Fields. This perennial event has become a favourite amongst local runners and even sees competitors from much further afield coming to the village, encouraged by reports of a run with a local feel that takes in some beautiful countryside. The first Wheathampstead 10K took place in May 2000, the brainchild of a parent at Beech Hyde School. He had identified a scenic course to the west of the village, the rump of which is made up by the bed of the disused Welwyn to Luton railway line; the footpaths feeding off from the old track bed make up the rest of the course. 150 runners took part in the first event and helped raise much needed funds for the school. All agreed the route was taxing, but quite outstanding in its beauty, threading its way across the Hertfordshire countryside as it did. So, a village event was born and has continued to grow to this day. Now organised by a team of parents from Beech Hyde School, the popularity of the run has spread across the Home Counties and beyond, whilst the proceeds have enhanced facilities for local children at Beech Hyde School in many ways. In the course of the last 10 years over 6500 people will have participated in this village inspired event, raising thousands of pounds for the school. Without doubt, the Wheathampstead 10K run represents everything that is a delight about running in Hertfordshire: the variation in scenery, the variation in weather from year to year, the endless undulations of the area, and most of all the warmth that can be found in the villages of this county.
